Pregnancy physiotherapy helps women manage physical and hormonal changes that arise during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. Pregnancy is a time of great change for a woman physically, emotionally and hormonally. As the fetus develops, increase stress is placed on the musculoskeletal system resulting in the potential for altered posture, shortened muscles, muscle imbalances, and changes in spinal mobility. These changes may present as pain and dysfunction in the back, hips, abdominals and pelvic region. During the postpartum phase, fluctuating hormone levels combined with additional physical changes as a result of delivery may also result in musculoskeletal problems such as excessive joint mobility, weakness of the core stabilizers, and altered spinal mobility and function.
