Real time ultrasound is an imaging tool that uses high frequency sound waves and echoes to produce an image of muscles deep within the body that cannot easily be palpated during exercise. Our physios are able to use this image to assess the quality, strength and control of a muscle contraction. Stabilising or core muscles of the spine can be difficult to assess accurately and the use of real time ultrasound imaging provides an image of how the muscles work as they are being exercised. It can be used as an assessment tool or a training tool.
